Obstruction Lighting – An Introduction
Obstruction lighting, as the name suggests, is a means of effectively producing a means to provide adequate lighting to an aircraft regarding the obstruction lying in its way, thereby preventing any sort of damage or calamity.
Obstruction lighting has formed a very integral part of the aviation industry. There are reports of calamities that keep occurring due to the collision of an aircraft with a building. Certain steps that have been taken to ensure that the probability of the occurrence of such accidents is lowered to almost zero involve obstruction lights.
These lights especially come in handy during the rainy season or during thick fog conditions. At night also, when the visibility can be substantially low sometimes, these lights play a very important role in letting the pilot know, whether or not anything lies in his path.
Such lights are normally installed atop high buildings, telephone towers; refineries etc. because these places have a high risk or are more vulnerable due to their height.
There are certain requirements that these lights must be able to suffice. They should be able to provide accurate signals or light for a long distance without fail. For this, normally red colored light is chosen because it has the maximum wavelength. In addition, they should not consume a lot of power or get worn out easily. Such features would ensure the longevity of the device and reduce maintenance costs by half.
Obstruction lights come a lot handy in the aversion of disasters. Almost every major building in a region makes sure that it is well equipped when it comes to being safe and as a norm; they install the obstruction light machinery. It has formed a very integral part of airline machinery and cannot be overlooked at any cost.
